Call for Participation. Researchers and practitioners now have the opportunity to apply to participate in the work on the next IPBES Global Assessment Report. The report is expected to be published in 2028 and will have a significant impact on how the biodiversity crisis is addressed in the future.
In 2019, IPBES published the report Global Assessment Report on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services as a status report and assessment of trends in global biodiversity and ecosystem services.
The report was the first global assessment in 20 years and the largest of its kind, focusing on options for action to reverse biodiversity loss and ecosystem degradation, as well as an assessment of the global community’s progress toward achieving the international biodiversity goals, known as the Aichi Targets. The findings from the latest global report on the state of biodiversity made headlines around the world, garnering significant media attention and influence.
Work on a new global report has begun in preparation for its planned release in 2028, and IPBES is therefore launching an international call for researchers, subject matter experts, and practitioners, who will have the opportunity to contribute to the report as authors.
Two Ways to Apply
IPBES has announced two ways to apply to participate in the follow-up consensus report: as an expert or as a junior researcher:
- Application as an Expert is open to candidates with regional and global experience and expertise in, among other things, terrestrial, marine, and freshwater ecosystems and their contributions to human society. In addition, we are seeking candidates with knowledge of local and indigenous peoples, as well as experts in political decision-making processes. The application deadline is March 28, 2025.

- Application as a Junior Researcher is specifically intended for candidates who are at an early stage in their careers and who are interested in gaining experience within the framework of IPBES. Candidates will have the opportunity to participate in IPBES’s fellowship program, which includes a mentorship program. The application deadline is March 28, 2025.

Applicants who wish to receive a government nomination may apply for one through IPBES’s Danish Steering Group. The Ministry of Green Tripartite Cooperation is ultimately responsible for nominating these experts. Approximately 80% of the authors have received a government nomination.
