What is IPBES?
IPBES stands for “The Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services.” In many ways, IPBES’s role is comparable to that of the UN’s climate panel, the “Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change” (IPCC). Today, 147 nations worldwide have joined IPBES, including Denmark, and that number continues to grow. The headquarters of the international IPBES network is located in Bonn.

Denmark played a key role in the creation of IPBES
IPBES was established during Denmark’s EU Presidency in 2012. During the lengthy negotiations leading up to its establishment, Denmark hosted and played a leading role in a series of events that helped lay the groundwork for IPBES within the EU and globally.
One of the objectives of IPBES is to provide information and knowledge to governments and other decision-makers, the private sector, and the general public regarding the state of the planet’s biodiversity and ecosystem services, and, on that basis, to ensure the best possible foundation for decision-making.
