If we are to address the global biodiversity crisis, it will require a fundamental shift across sectors, in which the value of nature and biodiversity is quantified and incorporated into policy-making processes. The value of biodiversity is therefore the focal point of our next symposium on June 16, 2023, featuring leading researchers from both Denmark and abroad.

Denmark, along with the majority of the world’s countries, is miles away from meeting the agreed-upon goals for our natural environment and biodiversity. A major reason for this is the lack of language, methods, and calculation models for the many values of nature and biodiversity, which cannot be quantified solely in kroner and øre—or euros, for that matter.
Against this backdrop, the UN Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) published the global “Values” report last year, which presents methods and models for assessing the economic, social, and environmental values of nature and biodiversity, as well as recommendations for incorporating these into policy-making processes.
At the same time, the findings are linked to an understanding of how to implement the far-reaching changes needed to reverse the biodiversity crisis, thereby setting the stage for next year’s global report from IPBES on “Transformative Change.”
Symposium featuring leading researchers and experts
The upcoming symposium “The Value of Biodiversity—Fundamental Changes in Our Relationship with Nature” will serve as a national culmination of several years of global efforts to rethink our relationship with nature. This is achieved by linking it to values and valuation to make the losses and gains in value visible and more measurable, while also helping to drive the necessary far-reaching change across all sectors of society.
The symposium consists of an international and a national segment, during which selected authors of the global IPBES report will present the report’s findings, with a particular focus on how these findings can be implemented at the national level. This will be followed by a panel discussion in which questions will be posed regarding the report’s findings. In the symposium’s second session, leading Danish and European researchers will share their insights on the latest research and knowledge regarding green GDP, growth without economic growth, and the need for fundamental changes in our relationship with nature.
Among the symposium’s speakers, we are pleased to welcome lead author Professor Unai Pascual from the Basque Center for Climate Change, who will present the findings of the Values report. Also participating are Professor Mette Termansen (IFRO, University of Copenhagen), a co-author of the Values report; Professor Jette Bredahl Jacobsen (IFRO, University of Copenhagen), Professor and Chair of the Biodiversity Council, Signe Normand (Aarhus University), Professor Arild Vatn (Norwegian University of Science and Technology), as well as the European Environment Agency (EEA).
