IPBES Denmark has just launched a new website—a so-called Webflow site—that provides an overview of the biodiversity crisis. On the website, you can find information about the biodiversity crisis from both a global perspective and a national focus, with a particular emphasis on Denmark’s seas, fjords, and terrestrial nature.
“The Biodiversity Crisis Can Be Solved” is both the message and the name of the new webflow, which highlights one of the planet’s most pressing challenges—on par with the climate crisis—namely, the loss of species and ecosystems.
Through a “flow” of short text descriptions, images, and video clips, the new website provides an introduction to the greatest threats to biodiversity. For example, gain insight into how the loss of natural habitats, overexploitation of natural resources, and climate change have affected global biodiversity. Or get a quick overview of how nutrient runoff from agriculture has affected biodiversity in Danish seas and fjords. You can also learn more about how the fragmentation of natural areas or the drainage of low-lying wetlands has affected biodiversity in Denmark’s terrestrial ecosystems.
In addition to providing an overview of the greatest threats to biodiversity, you can also learn more about the options available to us for addressing these threats. Learn, for example, how dedicating more space to wild nature and creating corridors between natural areas will improve connectivity in the Danish landscape, including how undisturbed forests support habitats for a myriad of species.
An Overview at Eye Level
This website is especially for those of you who don’t already know much about the biodiversity crisis but would like to learn more. You can also use the website as a helpful resource to gain a solid overview of the topic in a relatively short amount of time, with a series of images complementing the brief text descriptions. Finally, the website is an ideal supplement to the teaching materials on the biodiversity crisis developed by IPBES Denmark and aimed primarily at high schools.
The Website and Webflow www.biodiversitetskrisenkanloeses.dk were designed by Emil Willumsen. IPBES Denmark developed the concept and wrote the text, while academic quality assurance was provided by Professor Carsten Rahbek (University of Copenhagen), Dennis Lisbjerg (DTU Aqua), Sara Egemose (University of Southern Denmark), and Professor Hans Ramløv (Roskilde University).
